Signal processing has several application areas and it is one of the key technologies in communication, embedded and intelligent systems. Acoustics, understood widely, means various sound phenomena and related technology, for example audio and speech processing.

Research fields for the Signal Processing groups includes statistical signal processing in communication systems, multiantenna systems and hardware implementation of signal processing systems.

The research conducted by the Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing group focuses on acoustics, audio, speech technology, and related digital signal processing. Lately, active topics have included for example physical modeling sound synthesis, modeling of sound perception, 3-D and multichannel sound reproduction, speech recognition, speech production and analysis, speech enhancement in mobile phones and mathematical methods of speech processing.

The research activities at Metrology Research Institute involve electronics, modern optics and optical radiation measurements. The special research areas are the optical quantities of photometry and radiometry, laser based length metrology and optical telecommunication. The Metrology Research Institute is the national standards laboratory for optical quantities. The Metrology Research Institute is a joint laboratory of Aalto University and MIKES and it is involved in many national and international projects.
