The Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing group is the only university unit in Finland that focuses primarily on research and teaching of acoustics, speech, and sound processing.
The group was established in its current form in 1981. The activities were started several decades earlier as part of another unit at former TKK. The first professorship in acoustics was founded in 1986, and until the year 2002, four professorships had been founded.
The group has the best acoustic research facilities in Finland, such as a large anechoic chamber and a standard listening room. Research fields include, for example, applications of digital signal processing to acoustics, audio, speech communication technology, and music technology.
Recently, the main focus areas of research at the Acoustics and Audio Signal Processing group have been physical modeling of musical instruments, natural-sounding synthesis of music and speech, audio coding, perceptually-based audio processing, multi-channel and 3-D sound reproduction, analysis of speech production and its applications in brain research and medical engineering, and spectral modeling of speech.
